April
9 2003:
Let's Teach the World!
On April 9, the GCE will organise the world's biggest
ever lesson. Anyone, anywhere, regardless of age and
sex, can take part. In more than 100 countries, in thousands
of different classrooms, adult education centres, university
campuses, churches and village halls, we will be teaching
the same lesson to the world. The lesson is simple:
girls and women need an equal chance to learn.
The World Record attempt will take place at two times:
3.30 a.m. GMT in South and Southeast Asia and 1.00
pm GMT in the rest of the world. By participating,
you will help us to spread the word on girls' and
women's right to education. And you will become a
part of history by setting a new Guinness World Record!
It's easy - just write to us at worldrecord@campaignforeducation.org
for simple instructions, a registration form and a
copy of the World Record Lesson Plan.
The World's Biggest Lesson could be one part of a
whole programme of lectures, debates, drama, music,
etc. on the 9th of April. Give girls a chance to take
the podium and be the teachers -- telling the adults
what they need in order to get a good education!
Hold the World's Biggest Lesson during a "learn-in"
at local schools - where out-of-school children and
illiterate youth and adults "occupy" classrooms
to symbolise their demand for quality education.
Organise marches of girls and women to parliament
or local government offices; present community petitions
or declarations to national leaders, calling for specific
actions to achieve the 2005 goal. The policy recommendations
below may help to get the ball rolling.
Ask a famous woman with an interesting life story
to write a newspaper article or give a media interview
on how education changed her own life.
Organise fact-finding visits to schools or adult education
centres by local officials and female journalists.
